Living in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is what happens when you step slightly outside the chaos of modern life without fully giving anything up. It’s a small city in northern Thailand surrounded by mountains, with just enough infrastructure to feel comfortable and just enough slowness to feel like a reset.

A typical day starts with a cheap but genuinely good coffee, maybe at one of the many cafés where half the people are on laptops but no one seems particularly stressed about it. You’ll notice pretty quickly that time feels different here. Things still get done, just without the constant urgency you’re used to.

The appeal for expats is pretty straightforward. Your money goes further, the food is incredible and easy to access, and you can build a routine that feels balanced without trying that hard. It’s very normal to work in the morning, grab a $2 lunch, get a massage in the afternoon, and still feel like you’ve had a productive day.

There are tradeoffs. Burning season can be rough, and visas take some effort to figure out. But people keep staying longer than planned, which probably tells you everything you need to know. Chiang Mai isn’t trying to sell you anything. It just ends up being a place that quietly works.
